A New Interpretation of the Story of Laozi′s Cultivation of the Hu Ethnic People: from a Pseudo Story to the Historical Fact

"老子化胡"说从两千年前左右产生至今,已经不是单凭史学考据就可以定论的伪说,而是异质文化之争的潜在史实。历史中的伪说可以变成史实,这就是"人文化成"的奇功。"老子化胡"是中国传统文化的凯旋,却未必是个体意义上的中国人的福音。从本质上说,"老子化胡"说所说的并非故去的旧事,而是常新的现实。

The story of Laozi＇s cultivation of the Hu ethnic people originated about two thousand years ago. Up to now, it has been accepted as the underlying historical fact of the contention between heterogeneous cultures rather than a pseudo story based merely on the alleged historical textual research. A pseudo story in history has changed into a historical fact, which is the very magic function of Humanistic Cultivation. Laozi＇s cultivation of the Hu is the triumph of traditional Chinese culture but it is hardly a gospel for the Chinese in the sense of individuality. Actually, what the story of Laozi＇s cultivation of the Hu has asserted is not an old thing that has passed away but the reality that remains fresh.
