This paper examines the respective efforts of Chinese Literature Press (CLP) and Anglophone translators in rendering Chinese women writers into English after the Cultural Revolution. It aims to explore the highly selective nature in their choice of intended translations and demonstrate how the image of Chinese fictional literature and society is constructed. Different orientations of both sides are explored: Anglophone world constructs a somewhat stereotyped image of Chinese literature and society with a strong interest in works highly westernized or with strong political implications, while local institution attempts to present a more truthful and positive image of China with a preference to realistic literature and an exclusion of feminist writing. CLP's negligence of some writings featuring female awareness displays its somewhat conscious or unconscious tendency of rendering China's overall image by the name of "women".
