On January 25, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Xi Jinping met with Natsuo Yamaguchi, leader of the New Komeito Party, the smaller partner in Japan＇s coalition government. Xi stressed that both sides should continue to improve the bilareral relationship in a sustained, healthy and stable way, addressing sensitive issues ef- fectively and promptly. China＇s stance on the Diaoyu Islands is consistent and clear, he said. He urged the Japanese side to respect both thehistoric and current realities and work with China to resolve problems through dialogue. He added that Japan should respect the feelings of the Chinese people and treat histori- cal issues approprlately.
