In recent years, with the rapid growth of China’s economy, more and more international academic conferences are held in this country. However, substantial interactions between Chinese and foreign music academics in terms of opinions and methods over specific objects of study seem to be insufficient, and even at international conferences, there is apparently lack of communication of ideas and thoughts among each other. Academic papers that Chinese scholars have published in Chinese-language periodicals in China have very few timely feedbacks from or are barely quoted in oversea academia. What really should draw attention of Chinese music academics is the fact that, among all the 80 music periodicals listed in A&HCI, there is no single Chinese-language periodical, nor even a single music periodical from the Asia-Pacific region. Although the authority of A&HCI’s decision on the listed music periodicals can be questioned, this phenomenon at least reflects an issue that requires our intense awareness, that is, in global terms, music periodicals in Chinese language or published in the Asia-Pacific region have so far very limited influence in arts and humanities in the West, or in other words, their influence is too little to attract the attention of world first-class bibliometricians. Moreover, under the current situation, music papers published in Chinese-language periodicals in China can hardly gain immediate attention of their overseas counterparts other than those in Chinese-speaking regions and in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the past years, many far-sighted people both in China and abroad have been paying high attention to the internationalization of the musicology discipline in China, and more and more efforts have been devoted towards this end. Undoubtedly, it is an important way to create internationalized high-quality Chinese music periodicals and likewise, it is an important sign to have them listed in A&HCI. In fact, great efforts have been made in recent years to effectively internationalize Chinese music periodicals. For instance, paper formats in music periodicals tend to be more and more consistent, music papers can be searched for in the country’s major electronic databases, and even some foreign musicologists have started to use Chinese electronic databases through their libraries and internet. It is necessary to point out, however, that the translations in many music periodicals’English catalogues and abstracts are depressingly in low quality with many errors which made it hard to attain much respect from their Western colleagues in academia. At present, the country is facing the lack of talents in this field, a situation which has largely hindered the internationalization process of Chinese musicology. It is therefore our wish that today’s Chinese musicologists should dedicate their greatest efforts and wisdom to inheriting the rich academic traditions from the ancient times in China, and usher in a new era of more mature and internationalized contemporary musicological research.
