Around the problem of time in and around Merleau-Ponty and through a re-description of his descriptions, this article tries to interpret time as a double movement of coming and going. Merleau-Ponty opposes the concept of time as mere one after another, and in contrast derives the unity of time to a field of presence whose core consists in living presence. But self-affection opens a fissure of time and brings us into a permanent circle of reprise and project. In order to solve this problem, the author explains the double movement of coming and going as a double event of pathos and response. Such a crossing of pathos and response opens a non-place precisely where something new arises. Merleau-Ponty’s chiasm of time should purge any cover by simultaneity and reversibility. Coming and going do not form a circle.
