To investigate the role of sex hormones in the pathogenesis of SLE, the serum levels of testosterone(T)、 free testosterone(FT)、 dihydrotestosterone(DHT) dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA)、 estradiol(E2)、 progesterone(Pr) and prolactin(PRL) were measured in 20 female patients with SLE and 10 normal controls by radioimmunoassay. We found that serum levels of T、 FT、 DHT、 DHEA and Pr in SLE patients were significantly lower than those in the controls, the level of PRL was significantly increased(P< 0.05); E2 was not significantly different from the controls (P >0.05); patients not treated with corticosteroid showed decreased level of androgen(P< 0.05). It suggests that abnormal levels of sex hormones may play a role in the pathogenesis of SLE.
