It is agreed that Janie, the heroin of Hurston' s masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God, was a new black female in possession of her own voice and having gained her self-identity. However, an analysis of Janie' s voice, the images relevant to Janie and the temperament of Janie shows that this novel still bathes in the ideology of patriarchy, from which it tries simultaneously to escape. Janie is essentially a traditional woman, catering to the image of woman def'med by patriarchical ideology. In this sense, this novel works as an accessory with patriarchy.
