Adaptation and Dedication——Christianity in Chinese Society

基督宗教在中国社会处境中究竟应该如何适应和发展,这是在理论和实践中仍然存有分歧的问题。基督宗教在华应不应该"中国化"以及如何实现其"中国化"的议题看似容易实则不易。基督宗教在中国处境的复杂性既有政治原因,也有文化因素,由此使之在中西政治对话和文化沟通上赋有特殊使命。在过往历史中,基督教会顺应西方政治势力的东扩而在中国留下了种种阴影和遗憾,但这种整体氛围中的缺陷也并没有完全掩盖相关地域或地方教会及其宣教人员努力践行的服务和奉献。因此,这种双重图景使基督宗教在中国改革开放的形势下获得了新的机遇,可以弥补过去的不足,开创未来的业绩。在仍旧延续的中西政治纷争和文化隔膜中,基督宗教信徒若以"超越东西方"的境界来在中国社会处境中积极适应和忘我奉献,则有可能重新构建真正沟通中西的桥梁。

How should Christianity adapt to and develop in Chinese society remains an issue of debate in theory and practice.Should it be sinicized? And how to sinicize it? The topic is deceivingly easy.The complexity of Christianity in Chinese situation has both political and cultural causes,which endows it with a special mission in political dialogue and cultural communication between China and the West.Christian churches used to behave shamefully in compliance with western political power,which,however,do not conceal the service and sacrifice of some local churches and their propagandists.And this duplicity provides Christianity with new opportunities to compensate for its past wrongs and to accomplish its future achievement in contemporary China with a reform and opening policy.In the still-on-going political struggle and cultural estrangement between China and the West,with active adaptation and full dedication striving to go 'beyond east and west',it is possible for Christianity to reconstruct the bridge of communication between China and the West.
