A Comparison of Singapore’s and Malaysia’s English Policies and Their Trend of Development

马来西亚和新加坡历史上都曾是英国殖民地,英语对两国语言政策产生了很大的影响,两国英殖民时期和独立建国后主要的英语政策在历史原因、国家意识、教育制度和近期发展四个方面都存在差异,新马两国将继续保留多元语言并重视英语的教育和传播,面对英语的强势回国,两国均需尊重并遵循语言传播规律,建立相应的语言政策评估体系,正确引导英语的传播和应用并指导语言政策的调整和制定。

Malaysia and Singapore are both former British colonies,and their language policy is heavily influenced by English.This study reviews their major English policies during their colonization and after their independence,and compares them in terms of historical causes,national consciousness,educational system and recent development.It concludes that the two nations will remain multilingual and will emphasize English education and transmission.Confronted with the power of English,they ought to respect and obey the law of language transmission,establish an evaluation system of language policy,guide the transmission and application of the English language,and conduct the formulation and adjustment of their language policies.
