朱熹作为南宋儒学的一代宗师,世人多被他理学家的光芒所吸引,而未能全面发现其崇高的民族气节和爱国精神。朱熹生活在宋金对峙的时代,民族气节和爱国精神贯穿他生命的始终。朱熹集政治家、哲学家、文学家、教育家于一身,从他大量的奏章策论、诗赋文章、言谈议论中,表现出崇高的民族气节,流露出深沉的爱国情感。朱熹爱国精神形成的原因,一是理学家内在的修身要求;二是抗金的现实需要;三是儒家士大夫责任担当意识的自然流露。
