Translation is a decision--making process, during which the translator is greatly influenced by various elements. This paper is designed to explore the decisions made by David Hawkes in his translating of The Story of the Stone from the perspective of the elements that affect text selection and text translation. It points out that every decision made by the translator is meaningful and is the result of the translator＇s active participation. The decision--making process reveals the subjectivity of the translator.
