William Somerset Maugham＇s drama and novels are excellently created, while his short stories are no worse than them. But readers or academia have paid little attention tothe latter. This paper, taking Selected Short Stories of William Somerset Maugham as the data, holds that his short stories, with defamilarities as the narrating way, has created many full-flown characters, and thus achieved high artistry.
