Passage 1 Salmon’s Life Cycle Salmon are born in freshwater streams. After 2 - 4 years, depending on the species, they grow into silver colored smolts about five inches long. Now the young salmon are ready to migrate downstream to the sea. They travel together in schools to feeding grounds hundreds or even thousands of miles away from their birthplace. During their migration, the juveniles gain weight quickly and develop to adulthood.
