Objective To investigate the current situation in research of faecal microbiota transplantation by analyzing the papers published in 2008-2012 on faecal microbiota transplantation. Methods The publication time, countries, institutions, source journals, types and high frequency subject headings of papers on faecal microbiota transplantation covered in PubMed and EMBASE from 2008 to 2012 were analyzed. Results The number of papers on faecal microbiota transplantation increased from 2008 to 2012. The USA ranked first in the field of faecal microbiota transplantation followed by Canada, Britain, Australia, and Netherlands. Papers published by authors of China's Mainland could hardly be found. Of the institutions that published papers on faecal microbiota transplantation from 2008 to 2012, those in USA accounted for 58.33%. Of the authors who published more than 2 papers,7 were from USA. The largest number of papers on faecal microbiota transplantation was published in American Journal of Gastroenterology. The high frequency subject headings in papers on faecal microbiota transplantation were Clostridium difficile, Pseudomembranous enterocolitis, recurrence and treatment outcome. Condusion The number of papers on faecal microbiota transplantation increases year by year from 2008 to 2012. USA ranks first in research of faecal microbiota transplantation. The effect of faecal microbiota transplantation on Clostridium difficile-related recurrent enteritis and its treatment outcome are the major focus followed by selection of stool donor, stool preparation and drug delivery method.
