The Summer of the Ubume is the first novel of Natsuhiko Kyogoku, a contemporary Japanese mystery writer. As the core subject in the novel, exorcism of attached spirits is also one of Natsuhiko Kyogoku＇ s most important literary innovations. The novel displays some distinctive features of Japanese culture through the complicated relationship between the heroine with her family and the spirits, namely, the Ubume and the Kappa. By closely examining the depiction of the attached spirits and the main characters in the novel, this essay attempts to discuss the deep cultural connotation and Japanese folkloristic art in the novel.
