沿海滩涂的概念有狭义与广义之分。狭义的沿海滩涂只包括潮间带,广义的沿海滩涂则包括潮上带、潮间带和潮下带。概念的不统一使得沿海滩涂面积的统计数据相差甚远。沿海滩涂应该定义为具有可供沿海生物生存、栖息和繁殖的生态物质基础的潮间带、潮上带和潮下带,凡是不具有沿海生物生存所需要的生态特征的潮上带和潮下带便不是沿海滩涂。沿海滩涂按照不同的标准,可以有不同的种类划分。

the concept of shoaly land （or tidal flat）can be defined from generalized sense and narrow sense. From narrow sense, shoaly land includes only the intertidal zone. From generalized sense, shoaly land includes supratidal zone, intertidal zone and subtidal zone. Because of the concept not uniform, the statistical data of shoaly land is far different. In this article, shoaly land is defined to include the intertidal zone, supratidal zone and subtidal zone which have available for coastal biological survival, habitat and breeding in. But if the supratidal zone or subtidal belt does not have ecological characteristics of coastal biological survival, it is not shoaly land. According to different standards, shoaly land can be divided into different kinds.
