The English Translations of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Poetry 1935-2011:A Review

近百年来海内外诗人、学者围绕现当代诗歌展开了大规模的翻译和文化交流活动,这不仅在一定程度上促进了它的发展,而且构成了"文化走出去"浪潮中一股不可忽视的力量。本文拟对现当代诗歌的英译状况分四个阶段描述,首先介绍不同阶段英译本的概况和特点,然后就英译本涉及的诗人、诗作、译者和出版社情况进行探讨,最后指出现当代诗歌译介的发展趋势、不足和将来研究的方向,为其译介研究提供综述性史料借鉴。

This article means to address a gap between the growing number of English translations of modern/ contemporary Chinese poetry and a lack of serious and solid investigations into the topic in question. Dividing the history of the English rendition of modern/contemporary Chinese poetry into four periods, the authors identify each phase’s main characteristics and dominant trends and then look closely into the poetry translated as well as the roles played in the translation process by the poets, the translators and the publishers throughout all four stages. Speculations are also made as to the directions in which the translation of Chinese poetry may further develop itself.
