Allen Tate's The Fathers is narrated from the angle of Lacy Buchan. It recounts the historical Southern trauma represented by the ruin of the Pleasant Hill, and reflects a narrative predicament of the traumatic narrator. Trauma results in a cognitive dilemma and temporal disorder which are indicated by the vague antecedents and semantic ambiguity in Lacy's narrative; while traumatic belatedness starts a discourse between the past and the present, and is represented by the anachrony in tenses and the use of many parentheses in his narrative. The tension of Lacy's memory vacillates between personal memory and collective memory, and between memorizing and forgetting. By stiching up the fragments of his memory, Lacy's narrative re-builds the past history, and works through his testimony of the trauma.
