Objectives To investigate the textual features of relative clauses in the Chinese sign language. Methods The objects of reference were set and the subjects repeated the objects in Chinese sign language. The sign language corpora were transferred into written language and then analyzed. Results The analysis of the corpora showed that sign language users often use relative clauses when telling a story. The subjects tended to define a head noun by a restrictive modifier when it first appeared in their narrations. However, some expressions of spatial location will be used more often to substitute the head noun when it reappeared, that is, the subjects used finger-pointing (a relatively fixed hand gesture) to substitute relative clauses or use digits and direct nomination to refer to the objects. Conclusion The sign language users can use relative clauses in the narrative texts but the frequency is relatively low. They tend to use head-internal relative clauses and the use frequencies of restrictive relative clauses and non-restrictive relative clauses show no significant difference.
