How to Promote Contemporary Chinese Literature Going Global — An Interview with Professor Wang Ning

本文是对清华大学王宁教授的访谈录。王宁教授是中国当代极少数对中国文学走向世界抱有坚定信心的学者之一。首先,他介绍了世界主义和世界文学这一理论话题及与中国的关系,并介绍了中国现当代文学在欧洲一些小国的译介和传播状况。他认为,在全球化的时代,翻译的作用变得更为重要,而重点应转向中译外工作。但由于只有极少数汉学家愿意从事这项工作,因此,他提出了依靠自己的力量,以我为主的观点,并提出了与西方汉学家通力合作的几种方式以及若干有效的传播策略。同时,国家和外语院系都应该重视中译外人才的培养和译者的辛勤劳动。最后,王教授还介绍了他主持的一项"经典中国国际出版工程"重点项目,并为外语界的学术新秀提出了殷切希望。

This is an interview with Professor Wang Ning, one of few Chinese scholars who have complete confi-dence in the cause of Chinese literature ＂going global＂. In this interview, Professor Wang introduced the theoreti-cal concepts of cosmopolitanism and world literature as well as their relationship with China. And then he looked back on the translation and dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature in some small European countries. Ac-cording to him, in the era of globalization, translation is playing a more important role, but the focus should be shifted to the translation and dissemination of Chinese literature to the world. However, as very few sinologists are willing to be devoted into that cause, he expressed the idea that we must rely mainly on ourselves, and he also pointed out several ways of cooperating with western sinologists and some effective means of disseminating Chinese literature into the world. At the same time, the Chinese government and universities should value the work of trans- lators and attach great importance to the cultivation of high-level translators who can translate Chinese literature into foreign languages. Finally, he expressed his hopes for foreign languages talents after a brief introduction to one ma-jor ＂Classic China International Publishing Project＂ that he is directing.
