Baumgartner's Bombay, a masterpiece by celebrated Indian English writer Anita Desai in 1988, taking India as its background, describes the aimless, rootless and involuntary exilic life of the protagonist Baumgartner. This paper, by taking Desai's personal experiences into account, focuses on the split language, the lost identity, the contrast between the past and the present and the distinction between the center and the margin to analyze the different layers of Baumgartner's disintegrated life.
