皮尔斯的符号学为后世摄影理论的研究者提供了有效的研究路径。他提出的解释物以及对符号的三分等,让研究者们认真关注符号与对象之间意义的复杂生成过程,以及摄影影像与绘画得以相区别的本质问题。法国著名学者亨利·范·利耶在建构自己的摄影哲学体系时借用了来自皮尔斯的标记符概念,并更为清晰地界定了其所具有的内涵。他对摄影的哲学思考是建立在坚实的物质性基础之上,用宏大的视野解读了摄影影像与景物、人类社会之间的复杂关系以及对摄影的本质性问题的深入探讨。所以,皮尔斯的符号学理论对西方摄影理论研究有着极为深远的影响。
Peirce's semiotics provides an effective path of research for subsequent researchers in the theories of photography. The "interpretant"and the tripartite division of symbols he proposes make it possible for researchers to seriously study the complex process in which meaning is created between a symbol and its object and the basic question of how photographic im- ages and paintings are differentiated. Henri Van Lier, a famous French scholar, adopts Peirce's concept of index in construc- ting his philosophical system of photography and defines their connotations more clearly. His philosophical reflections on photography, built on a solid material basis, interpret the complex relationship between photographic images and scenic ob- jects and human society in a grand vision and explore at great length basic questions of photography. Therefore, Peirce's se- miotic theories exert a far-reaching influence on Western ideas of photography.
