This article attempts to scrutinize Matthew Arnold＇s defense of criticism and his major critical concepts. Arnold holds that critical ability can furnish new ideas for creative ability and create an appropriate intellectual situation and social atmosphere for it. There is critical endeavor at work behind the birth of every great poet. Arnold＇s principal critical concept is ＂ disinterestedness＂, i. e. ＂seeing things as they are＂. His critical concepts are tinged with strong moral motives, and attempt to replace religion on the highest plane.
