This paper discusses how, in his novel The Painted Bird, Jerzy Kosinski has both successfully brought his reader into the traumatic scenes of history and enabled them to transcend and "work through" these traumatic memories, keeping a critical distance from the characters and narrated events by using the symbolic image of the painted bird and depicting the loss of speech and the cycle of violence.
