Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP)4 blongs to a family of fatty acid-binding proteins, which is mainly expressed in adipocytes and macrophages. The expression of FABP4 can be regulated by insulin and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR)-γ agonist. It could modulate inflammatory responses and was thought to be important in mediating intracellular fatty acid trafficking and energy metabolism. It was observed that FABP4 could increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and predict glycemic level. At the same time, FABP4 was significantly associated with occurrence and development of the risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications.
