Bernard Bailyn is one of the representative figures during the social and cultural shift in the history of education in the mid-20th century U. S. Based on his core concept ? a comprehensive narrative history ? as well as three research principles, i.e. (1) combining explicit history and implicit his tory, (2) combining the center and the peripheral in historical spatial relationships, and (3) combining people's inner world, external objective conditions and historical events, he proposed that education should be the entire process of cultural transfers by generations and that research on the history of education should focus on cultural interpretation of changes in families, communities and churches. That has had an important impact on the development of the scholarship of educational history.
