On Controversy between Ascetic Faction and Joseph Faction in Russian history

禁欲派与约瑟夫派的论战发生于15-16世纪之交。最初只是教会内部关于不同修行世界观的争论,其后由于触及如何处置宗教异端分子以及修道院是否应该拥有众多地产等关乎教会统一和政教关系的重要问题,在世俗政权的干涉和参与下,最终演变成了一场残酷的政治斗争。两派长达半个世纪的论战引起了强烈的社会反响,在俄罗斯国家、东正教教会以及整个俄罗斯文化的发展历史上留下了深刻的烙印。

The controversy between ascetic faction and Joseph faction occurred at the turn of 16th century. Initially the debate was within the church about different worldviews in practice, then due to important issues, which were related with the unity of church and church-state relations, including how to dispose religious heretics and whether monastery should have a number of real estate, it eventually evolved into a cruel political struggle with interference and involvement of secular regime. The argument between these two factions lasted for half a century and aroused strong social repercussions, branding deeply the state of Russia, the Orthodox Church and even the entire history of Russian culture.
