The four-volume memoir written by Wang Dingchung,one of the first generation writers from China＇s mainland to Taiwan,has played a key role in documenting family affairs and national sentiment,for it has recorded in detail Wangs＇ suffering in the specific historical era,his misery-filled growth,his departure from home,his admission into the army,his exile,his captivity,his arrival in Taiwan and his ultimate emigration to USA in mid-life in pursuit of physical and ideological freedom.The vicissitudes of Wang＇s life bears a close witness to the corresponding era.This paper intends to discuss the impact of wars on the nation and individuals by analyzing Wang＇s memoir and to discover people＇s insistences and breakthrough during the war by virtue of Wang＇s view of war so as to highlight the human and historical value of Wang＇s memoir and his artistic feeling for and philosophical reflection on life.
