Australian Department of Mineral and Energy(DME) assess the use of drilling fluids and the discharge of associated waste(cutting)according to environment sensitivity of the region,cutting treatment methods and environment performance of the drilling fluids.Standards of environmental performance includes biotoxicity,biodegradability and bioaccumulation and of base fluid and drilling fluids.It is the applicants'responsibility to determine the environment fields and possible impact resulted from drilling activities.For oilbased drilling fluids(OBF),aromatic content should not be more than 1%.The limitation on dry weight of SBF attached on cutting is 10%.Low level hydrocarbon in marine may be from the spill of large cutting piles and it is prudent to consider its removal and disposal.
