The real-time broken rail detection method based on the principle of track circuits is an effective way to carry out real-time broken rail detection in the railway sections without a track circuit. Based on the electric-insulated and signal-received principles and technologies of a track circuit, and by analyzing the operation principles of the track circuits of ZPWA-2000A and ZP-WI-18 type, a novel method of real-time broken rail detection is presented. The key component of the method is,in nature, a centre-fed double-sided current-received jointless track circuit. By qualitative analysis,it is understood that the signals detected by the four current sensors installed in rails indicate whether broken rail appears, and broken rail could be detected on the basis of analyzing and judging these signals. The method, which is worth researching and developing, has some virtues such as its performance effected little by the prime parameters of track circuits and the environmental factors, simple outdoor equipments, and strong ability to resist interference from traction return currents.
