The traditional exam-oriented assessment fails to measure students' English communicative abilities and facilitate students' learning autonomy. Portfolio assessment is believed to be a good way to complement the traditional assessment. This articles points out the necessity and benefits of portfolio assessment as a form of formative assessment. At the same time, the drawbacks of portfolio assessment are mentioned in the hope that it can provide some insights to English teaching in the near future.
