长江江豚是生活于我国长江中下游的一种独特的淡水小型鲸类.在过去的几十年中,由于生存环境的改变和恶化,其种群数量呈快速下降趋势,而由于近年来鄱阳湖在秋冬季节的通江水位持续下降,造成鄱阳湖这个长江江豚最重要的生境无法提供稳定的水体环境.建立在"控枯不控洪"的理念上的鄱阳湖水利枢纽,即在汛期闸门全部敞开,以保持"江湖连通",而在枯水期通过调度适当抬高鄱阳湖水位,可为江豚提供更广阔的水体环境,有利于维持长江江豚的江湖洄游习性的延续.

Yangtze finless porpoise （Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis） is the unique kind of fresh-water whales living in downstream of Yangtze River. In the past decades, Yangtze finless porpoise population declines rapidly due to the environmental change and deterioration. Because of Poyang Lake-River water level decreasing continually, it may no longer be the most optimal habitat for Yangtze finless porpoises. The Poyang-Lake-water-control project is aimed for regulating the most appropriate water- level during drought seasons, which provides much broader space in order to keep their exchange behavior between Yangtze River and Poyang Lake.
