Since the 1980s,the religious conservatives under the leadership of Ronald Reagan underwent a dramatic revival and spared no effort to restore traditional values and morality to America in the United States.Thus,bitter ＂culture wars＂ erupted between liberals and conservatives over the place of Western tradition and value system in the area of higher education.From the angle of culture wars,this essay represents a critical examination of violent thought clashes and practical contests between the two camps in and beyond American universities in the 1980s and 1990s.Against a complex historical and cultural background of American higher education reform,the paper further reveals the deep split and crisis within American universities and explores the future of higher education in the U.S.
