The Politeness Principle and appropriateness guarantee the success of linguistic communication. Combining the Politeness Principle by Leech with the appropriateness in language use, the writer made an analysis of many specific pragmatic failures in English-Chinese communication through a comparison of both languages. He proposes that polite words should be used appropriately in communication. Thus, the Politeness Principle gets a supplement and improvement and successful communications are ensured.
