A nanomesh has been developed that nearly triples solar cell efficiency. The research team managed to reduce the reflectivity of the materials used, effectively increasing the amount of captured light. In addition to this, the new solar cells are also much thinner than current ones on the market. The structure is created by sandwiching metal with nanomesh and is being called "Plasomnic Cavity with Subwavelength Hole array" or "PlaCSH" for short. It is so efficient that it only reflects about 4% of direct sunlight back. This correlates to a 52% increase in efficiency compared to ones that are currently on the market.
