Persuasions and Enlightenment:Genealogy Compiling and its Social Significance since the Qing Dynasty in the Downstream Qingshuijiang River Areas

清代以降,清水江下游的民众掀起了纂修族谱的风潮,从阅读现存清代以来清水江下游的族谱,可以发现族谱实际上起着劝谕与教化的作用。举凡族谱中的编纂体例、家训族规、个人传记等,无不显示了国家与地方文化精英为宣扬儒家伦理与国家教化所做出的努力。清王朝正是凭借宣扬宗族伦理并支持地方宗族组织发展等多种统治策略,成功地经营着帝国的边疆。

Genealogy compiling was popular among the people in the downstream Qingshuijiang River areas since the Qing Dynasty. Based on the reading of some genealogy records from the Qing Dynasty in the area, the present study leads to the conclusion that such genealogy played a role of persuasion and enlightenment, for the genealogy styles, family mottos and clan rules as well as biographies of family members show that both the national and local elites tried to promote Confucian ethics and na- tional enlightenment. Through varied domination strategies such as the spreading of clan virtues and the operations of local clan organizations, the Qing empire succeeded in the ruling of its frontier are- as.
