Australian Landscapes as Represented in Judith Wright's Poems

When composing her poems, Judith Wrigh, the Australian famous poet, was mainly inspired by the three places where she lived： New England tableau, the subtropical rainforests of Tamborine Mountain and the plains of the southern highlands near Braidwood. The New England tableau in her early works was for- midable with a quality of strange beauty. The subtropical rainforests of Tamborine Mountain were described as vivid, colorful, and fertile in the middle period of her poem-writing. In the later period of writing, Wright di- rectly imitated Australian flora and fauna. The different representations of the three places in Wright＇ s poems show that Wright the very beginnin gradually identified herself with the new land, though she was somewhat alienated from it at g. The changes of Wright＇ s attitudes toward European gardening -from an imitation of it to a withdrawal from it- reflect that she progressively freed herself from colonial mentality and blended in with the new environment.
