According to CHENG Yi's( 1033-1107 ) interpretation, the judgment "Stillness takes place with the back" in hexagram Gen [A, Restraint, 52] means "keeping still in invisible places" and its first line statement that "Stillness takes place with the toes" signifies "stopping at the place where one should stop". The former emphasizes "absolute stillness" while the latter focuzes on the place of stillness; The former can garantee the latter and the reciprocity of them can be helpful in realizing the meaning of "securi- ty and stillness" of Gen which symbolizes mountain. This route accords with his emphasis on reverence in self-cultivation where he emphasizes beth "warding off depravity" and "preserving sincerity" simultaneously and manifests his understanding that trigram or hexagram Gen symbolizes beth stillness and production, beth the beginning and the end. ZHU Xi ' s doubt about CHENG Yi' s inter-pretation might be that he did not attain to CHENG' s purport.
