The actual meaning and characterization content of failure rate A (t) and instantaneous failure rate h (t) are discussed deeply. At the same time, the role of failure density function f (t) which turned random failure numbers into continuous variations in reliability engineering calculation is explained. The suitable occasions of these reliability parameters in engineering application and calculation are analyzed. Through the simple discussion and practical calculation examples, instantaneous failure rate of the three characteristics are illustrated, allowing the learners of reliability basic theories understand the failure rate and instantaneous failure rate correctly.
