This paper analyzes disfluent pauses in Chinese - to - English consecutive interpreting generated by two graduate students of interpreting studies and one college student of pharmacy. By combing syntactic positinn and duration of pauses, the pauses can be derided into fluent pauses and disfluent pauses. The results reveal that disfluent pauses are most frequent. It is also found that the improvement of interpretation proficiency leads to fewer disfrequent pauses. The comparison between the source text and the transcribed target text reveals reasons for the occurrence of pauses, i. e., the difficulty in raising expression, repetition and repair. Based on the above findings, the study also puts forward some suggestions.
