谭恩美的代表作《喜福会》集中描写了四对母女:抛却国难家仇的四位母亲移居美国和生长在美国的华裔第二代女儿们。因为成长环境、自身经历、所受教育的不同,母女的价值观迥异。从"他者"和"主体"的角度来解读母女关系,挖掘中美文化的差异,展现传统文化与现代文化的冲撞。母女矛盾的解决体现了血浓于水的人性情感和两种文化的融合。

The relationships between Chinese immigrant mothers and American-born daughters are the focus in The Joy Luck Club. Mothers and daughters have obviously different values because of different growing environments, experiences and educations, which results in cultural conflicts. The dissertation is aimed at reflecting mother-danghter relationship from the perspective of the other and the native while the conflict between Chinese cul- ture and American culture, between traditional culture and modern culture is being showed. As blood is thicker than water, the conflict between moth- ers and dan^hters is finaUv resolved.
