牛头宗是中国禅宗发展转化过程中具有特殊意义的一个宗派。牛头宗在江左地区成长起来,有其义学的传统,很自然地接受了玄学贵无思想的熏染,以法融为代表的牛头宗禅师们的禅学思想,实质是江左传统思维在禅学的延续。从佛性论观念到修行方式,牛头宗禅学思想有明显的以无心合道为核心的玄学化倾向,这种典型的玄学化旨趣对中国禅宗整体上的建立及转向都贡献了自己的资源。

Niutou Zen is a significant branch in the development of Chinese Zen.It starts from the east part of the Yangtze River and has its own traditions and meanings.Niutou Zen is deeply influenced by the idea of inaction in metaphysics.The thoughts of Zen represented by Fa Rong are actually passed down from the traditional ideas of Zen in the east part of the Yangtze River.The thoughts of Niutou Zen have obvious metaphysics from their opinions about Buddhism to practice of Buddhism,which has contributed a lot to the establishment of Chinese Zen.
