在20世纪20年代至抗日战争爆发前,上海的阅读文化达到了历史上的鼎盛时期,形成了庞大的书业市场,报业繁荣,杂志发展迅速,儿童青少年学生、妇女成为发展最迅速的新兴阅读者群体,商人是报纸的消费大户,庞大的工人阶级对各类实用通俗的读物需求加大,各个阶层的阅读者形成了各自独特的阅读习惯。然而生活窘迫、识字不多等因素,加上战争的爆发,使这股阅读热迅速地退潮了。

From 1920s to the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, reading culture in Shanghai had entered its top period in history. A huge book market advent with the prosperity of journalism and magazine, and different classes developed their own specific reading habits. However, due to poor life, illiterate and the war, the reading fever rapidly faded away.
