The karyotypes of 8 species of passerine birds were studied using bone marrow cells with colohicine hypotonic air drying technique. The results indicated: Pitta brachyura 2 n =84; Dicrurus hottentottus 2 n =72; Sturnus nigricollis 2 n =76; Sturnus sericeus 2 n =78; Copsychus saularis 2 n =78; Myiophoneus caeruleus 2 n =78; Garrulax perspicillatus 2 n =76; Parus major 2 n =80. The karyotype of Pittidae was firstly reported. Macrochromosome pericentic inversion and deficiency of microchromosomes were found to play a significant role in karyotype evolution in this family.
