Death is an eternal theme in the literary works. Alfred Tennyson wrote a lot of poems about the theme, death, in his long career as a poet. Break, Break, Break and Crossing the Bar are the excellent and representative lyrics in his young age and his old age, and best express his attitudes toward death. Comparing the two poems＇transitivity system from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics, the article probes into the two poems＇ writing characteristics and Tennysonb different attitudes toward death in his young age and old age respectively.
