The Significance of “Chinese and Western Cultural Exchange”——A case study of Jin Yuelin

在学术界越来越重视中西文化交流的当下,有必要澄清"中西文化交流"概念的意义、所指及其相互关系。作为一个组合概念,"中西文化交流"的意义与所指具有宽泛性和历史性,这就要求在具体研究时,既要进行概念层面的意义分析,又要与具体所指对象的研究结合起来。唯有如此,才能理清哪些历史事件是真正的中西文化交流活动,哪些不是。从而不再把西方文化单方面的输入与中华文化单方面的输出视为中西文化交流。但是,为了澄清"中西文化交流"的意义和所指,就有必要把对概念的理解与具体的个案研究结合起来。

Given that more and more attention at present is paid to the exchange between Chinese cul ture and Western culture, it is necessary to re-define the concept, the referent and the relationship of ＂Chinese and Western cultural exchange＂. As a combined concept, its meaning and referent are broad and historical. So analyzing the meaning conceptually and investigating the referent concretely is in- dispensable to clarify which historical events are real cultural exchange activities between, and distin- guish the unilateral input of either Western culture or Chinese one from a cultural exchange. Therefore the clarification of the meaning and referent of ＂Chinese and Western cultural exchange＂ involves the conceptual understanding and the case study as a whole.
