January 26 is celebrated as Australia Day, which is also called by some Day of Mourning, Day of Invasion, or Day of Survival. The paper firstly describes the origin of Australia Day and the Indigenous people' s resistance to the day. Then by analysing the reports in Australian newspapers for the past ten years on the activities on Australia Day, and based on interviews of Australians, the paper explores the contents and the meaning of Australia Day to ordinary citizens. The paper reveals that the different interpretations of Australia Day not only reflect the conflicts between the Australian government and the Indigenous people in terms of policy-making, but also the tangled emotions of Australians as they straggle to maintain political correctness as well as celebrating their identities.
