This article discusses the essence, the classification and the characters of the teaching medium which is applied in distance education． The article first discusses the function quality of the teaching medium, and points out that the teaching medium is the carrier of the delivery and presentation of the teaching information, and at the same time, it can be regarded as the extension and reinforcement of the human senses and brains． The article summarizes the classification and its significance of the teaching medium, and put forward the classification of traditional medium, audio and video medium and e－medium． Then, the article discusses the argument on the essence of teaching medium in the circle of international education technology and distance education． In the end, the article discusses the characters of medium teaching and some of its research
