By comparing those born in the 1960s with their immediate predecessors, this article attempts to describe the cultural identity and spiritual characteristics of this generation. The author believes that the identity of 'the spectator' of this generation in their formative years and the predicament of 'rupture' in their cultural and spiritual history have given rise to their rebellion against the entirety of historical time by way of a spirit of 'play' in their cultural and creative processes. Such a spirit finds expression in the work of architects like Li Xiaodong and Wang Shu, who try to convey their own unique ideas of space through a serendipitous encounter.
