Liu Jingwen visits yesterday’s seasonal markets in a dream – the elegant sotto portico architecture of Guangzhou’s West Gate commercial area, the farmers who came in from the countryside to sell produce and buy household goods and the odd luxury, and the buzz of neighborhood residents who dressed up for market day. In the bazaars of Kashar and night markets of Taipei, he senses that romantic past, but notes that in Guangzhou today, the actual seasonal markets have been reduced to haphazard and illegal gatherings, where farmers and poor vendors spread plastic sheets on the sidewalk to hawk produce and cheap wares. Liu returns home to Shenzhen, where tomorrow shines brightly, if illusively; after all, how does one inhabit a world that has not yet come into being?
